Boy Assaulted Because of Red Hair and Facebook

A 12-year-old Calabasas boy was assaulted at school for having red hair and police believe Facebook promoted the attack. As many as 14 students at A.E. Wright Middle School in Calabasas attacked the red haired boy because a group on Facebook encouraging students to beat up redheads November 20.

In two separate incidents on Friday morning at A.E. Wright Middle School, the red hair boy was kicked and hit with fists all over his body. The boy was injured and immediately sought help from the school nurse.

Police believe the assault on the boy with red hair was inspired by a group promoting such attacks on Facebook, the popular social networking website. The Facebook group declared November 20 to be “Kick a Ginger Day” and called for attacks on “gingers” which people with red hair.

Police further believe the idea behind “Kick a Ginger Day” was inspired by a controversial 2005 episode of South Park titled “Ginger Kids.” In that episode, Cartman gives a class presentation in which delivers a hate-filled speech about”Gingers” – people with red hair, freckles and pale skin. The episode was later blamed for having inspired violence against red-haired children.

While police have not released details regarding how and why they believe the attack on the red-haired boy was inspired by the group on Facebook, they are investigating the incident as a possible assault with a deadly weapon. No arrests have been made at this time.
