Espn.com reports that NFL star and Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth plead guilty today to DUI manslaughter stemming from a car crash in which he hit and killed 59-year-old pedestrian Mario Reyes with his Bentley after a night of drinking in Miami.

Pursuant to the plea agreement, Stallworth was sentenced as follows:

• placed on 8 years of probation;
• serve 30 days in jail;
• serve two-years of house arrest to begin upon his release from jail;
• perform 1,000 hours of community service;
• undergo drug and alcohol testing; and
• life-time driver’s license suspension (may apply for restricted license after 5 years)

In addition to the plea agreement, Stallworth also reached a confidential financial settlement with Reyes’ family, thereby avoiding a civil lawsuit down the road.

By reaching this plea agreement, Stallworth avoided a potential 15 year prison sentence if he were convicted after trial. This plea also allows him to resume his NFL career at some point.

The Akron Beacon Journal reported that according to an NFL source, commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to discipline Stallworth before the Browns start training camp July 31. Stallworth could face suspension without pay for some games this year.

According to Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, Stallworth’s lack of previous criminal record, cooperation with police and willingness to accept responsibility, as well as, the Reyes family’s desire to resolve the matter quickly were all factors leading up to today’s plea agreement.
