The Los Angeles Times reports that Melissa Huckaby, the woman charged with kidnapping, raping and murdering 8-year-old Sandra Cantu, has been slapped with an additional charge of slipping harmful substances to a 7-year-old girl and a man earlier this year.

The former Sunday school teacher from Tracy, California, was in court Friday for her arraignment on charges involving Sandra Cantu’s murder when she was presented with the new charges alleging that Huckaby gave a “harmful substance” to a child identified only as “Jane M. Doe” on Jan. 17.

On that day, a resident living in the trailer park where Huckaby live reported her daughter missing. The mother told police that, at some time later, Huckaby returned the girl who looked as though she had been drugged with some type of muscle relaxant.

Additionally, Huckaby was charged with mixing a harmful substance with food or drink given to Daniel Plowman. Plowman was identified merely as a “victim and a witness” by Deputy District Attorney Robert Himmelblau. No additional description or details of the incident were provided at this time.

As a result of the new charges, the court continued Huckaby’s arraignment to June 12 at the request of her criminal defense attorney Sam Behar, a public defender, in order to allow him time to review the new charges and over a 1,000 pages of evidence provided by the prosecution.

Huckaby was originally arrested on April 10 after Sandra’s body was found in a suitcase pulled from an irrigation pond near her home in a Tracy mobile home park. In addition to being charged with her murder, Huckaby is charged with the special circumstance of rape, kidnapping and lewd or lascivious conduct with a child under 14, which could make her eligible for the death penalty upon conviction.
