Lancaster to Get New Prison for Sex Offenders and Gang Members!

by Gabriel Dorman on April 11, 2009

The Los Angeles Times reports that the state of California has finally decided where it plans on opening its new prison facility and the unlucky winner is the city of Lancaster, California. Despite heavy opposition from the city, state officials have decided to convert a local prison reception center into a long-term housing facility to house hundreds of “sensitive needs” inmates which includes both sex offenders and gang members.

Lancaster city officials argue that the Antelope Valley currently houses the highest per capita concentration of parolees and juvenile probationers. They fear that a new facility, housing what they call “the worst of the worst”, would only serve to attract their associates to the area and impact the city’s efforts to curb crime. While state officials understand these concerns, they are not enough to override the state’s need to provide permanent and safe housing for a statewide backlog of 1,500 sensitive needs prisoners.

Transfer of prisoners to the new facility is to begin next month.
