Ex-Orange County Sheriff Corona Asks to Remain Free On Bail …Yet Again!

by Gabriel Dorman on June 13, 2009

The Orange County Register reports that former/disgraced Orange County Sheriff Mike Corona took another shot at remaining free on bail pending his appeal of his witness tempering conviction by filing an appeal to the 9th Circuit, asking the court to set aside United States District Judge Andrew Guilford’s mandate that Carona must begin serving his sentence while his appeal is pending.

On April 27, U.S. District Judge Andrew Guilford sentenced Corona to 66 months if federal prison. Judge Guilford further allowed Corona to remain free on bail until July 24 when Corona is ordered to begin serving his sentence.

In May, Judge Guilford denied Carona’s request that he remain free while the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals weighs the validity of his conviction and further ordered that Corona must surrender to authorities by July 24.

Now, Corona’s lawyers have filed an appeal of Judge Guilford’s denial of his motion to remain free on bail claiming the ruling was made in error given, what they believe will be, the likelihood of success on the underlying appeal before the court.

Corona’s criminal defense attorneys believe there are several issues on appeal that could lead to the reversal of his conviction. The main argument centers on the government secretly recording Corona and one of his assistant sheriff’s, Don Haidl, in which Corona is heard leaning on Haidl to lie to the grand jury investigating allegations of corruption within Corona’s administration. It was these tapes which led to the witness tampering conviction.
