15 years after McLaughlin was shot six times inside his Balboa Coves home, his former live-in girlfriend, Nanette Johnston and her secret lover, Eric Naposki, were arrested yesterday on warrants charging Johnston with having McLaughlin killed for money. Naposki is alleged to be the gunman.

Johnston, of Ladera Ranch, who is now 45, and Naposki, a former NFL football player, now 44, were suspected of committing the murder from the start when it was discovered that the two were lovers during the time Johnston was living with McLaughlin, that Johnston stood to earn $1 million in life insurance benefits from McLaughlin’s death and and that she had been accused of writing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of checks drawn from his accounts.

Johnston was actually arrested and charged with stealing funds from McLaughlin’s accounts. She ended up pleading guilty to grand theft and forgery and agreed to repay McLauglin’s three children $500,000 in embezzled funds.

McLaughlin was murdered on December 15, 1994, when an intruder snuck into McLaughlin’s home and fired six bullets into his chest at close range while his son, Kevin, was upstairs. While police originally suspected Johnston and Naposki, no arrests were ever made because they were never able find the 9mm handgun used in the killing or any other physical evidence linking the two the crime.

It is unclear what new evidence has been found/developed that would substantiate the arrests made yesterday. In any case, it is a step closer to solving one of Orange County’s most notorious unsolved murders.

FYI: William Francis McLaughlin, who was 55 at the time of his death, made his fortune after founding Hemascience Laboratories. In the 1980’s, the company invented a device called Plasma Cell-C that filters plasma from blood which was used in almost every medical facility where blood is drawn.
