No License Suspension for Medical Marijuana Patients

The Los Angeles Times reports that the California Department of Motor Vehicles will no longer suspend or revoke driver’s licenses simply because of an individual’s status as a medical marijuana patient.

While the DMV stated that it never had a policy to suspend or revoke licenses for medical marijuana patients they have, nonetheless, issued a statement to its employees that medical marijuana should be treated like any other prescription drug and its use alone does not justify taking action against an individual’s driving privilege. As part of its new stance, the DMV also made these changes to the Department’s employee training manual.

The actions taken by the DMV come amid pressure from a lawsuit filed by Safe Access on behalf of a medical marijuana patient who had their licensed revoked. According to Joe Alford, chief counsel for Americans for Safe Access, the DMV has since restored this individual’s license.
