The new medical marijuana ordinance was approved by the Los Angeles City Council today. Under the new medical marijuana ordinance, hundreds of Los Angeles medical marijuana dispensaries will be forced to shut down and impose strict rules of operation for those dispensaries that will remain open.
The new Los Angeles medical marijuana ordinance passed quickly and without debate bringing an end to a discussion that started 4 1/2 years ago. Under the new Los Angeles medical marijuana ordinance, the following rules and restrictions will be imposed:
- caps the number of medical marijuana dispensaries allowed to operate in Los Angeles city at 70 with the exception to allow those dispensaries that were registered with the city in 2007 to remain open. City officials believe the total number of dispensaries is approximately 150;
- Los Angeles medical marijuana dispensaries cannot operate within 1000 feet of each other, schools, parks and libraries;
- Los Angeles medical marijuana dispensaries will be required to close at 8 p.m.
- marijuana use on the premises will be banned
The new Los Angeles medical marijuana ordinance will not go into effect until it is signed by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaragosa and the LA City Council approves the fees the dispensaries will have to pay to cover the cost of the city’s monitoring.
As for enforcement of the new Los Angeles medical marijuana ordinance, once finalized, city officials will send letters to all landlords and dispensary owners advising them they must close down immediately as they are in violation of the new medical marijuana ordinance. It is estimated that some 500 dispensaries will be forced to shut down under the new ordinance. If dispensary owners fail and/or refuse to shut down, they will most likely be taken to court by the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.
