Text Message Leads to Teacher’s Arrest for Giving Marijuana to Minor!

by Gabriel Dorman on June 17, 2009

The Orange County Register reports that text messages are the reason a Corona Del Mar High School math teacher has been arrested on suspicion of furnishing marijuana to a minor.

Chad Edward Smith, 37, was arrested last Thursday after a parent of a 16-year-old Newport Harbor High School student read text messages about the teen smoking marijuana with Smith.

According to Newport Beach Police Sgt. Evan Sailor, authorities believe that Smith met the teenage student outside of the school system and provided and smoked the marijuana with him. Sailor said “[o]ur concern is if he’s done this with other students or other minors from other schools.”

Smith was immediately put on administrative leave. He was released from custody after posting $50,000 bail.
