The Los Angeles Times reports that Los Angeles County jails will not close as a result of budget cuts stemming from the counties financial crisis.
A few months ago, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca indicated that he would have to close one or more of the Los Angeles County jail facilities unless additional funds could be found to keep them operating amid the public funding crisis. Sheriff Baca indicated that all or part of the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles and/or the county’s North Jail Facility at Pitchess Detention Center were on the chopping block.
However, that all changed when the department found an additional $25 million dollars in unspent funds and new revenue streams to keep the Los Angeles County jail facilities open.
“There will be no jail closures, and no portion of a jail will be closed,” said Steve Whitmore, the department’s spokesman. “There will no reductions in services in unincorporated areas and no reductions in detectives.”
