The Los Angeles Times reports that an LAPD officer plead guilty to a charge of assault with a firearm stemming from a 2008 indicent that happened at the Redondo Beach pier.
In March of 2008, David Woon Chong, a 39-year-old police officer with the LAPD threatened a restaurant patron with a knife after a verbal altercation with two men. A witness broke the matter up and Chong, who was off-duty at the time, walked away. A short time later, however, Chong returned and kicked some food out of the victim’s hand, pulled out a .45-caliber Glock semiautomatic handgun and pointed it at the man’s head.
The same witness interceded and walked Chong outside the restaurant where he was arrested by Redondo Beach police. At the time of his arrest, Chong allegedly had a blood alcohol concentration of .11%.
Today, Chong plead guilty to assault with a firearm. In exchange for his plea, two felony counts of making criminal threats and three misdemeanors will be dismissed. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen Marcus to undergo a 90-day evaluation by the Department of Corrections. His sentencing is scheduled for August 14.
