Minors Used As Decoys in Undercover Alcohol Operation

by Gabriel Dorman on August 5, 2009

The Orange County Register reports that police used minors as decoys as part of an Orange County undercover alcohol operation to find and stop businesses and people from furnishing alcohol to minors.

The Costa Mesa Police Department working in conjuction with the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) set up an undercover alcohol program where minors were sent into 23 liquor stores, markets, bars and restaurants to see if they could purchase alcohol. One business sold beer to an 18-year-old girl.

In what is called a “Shoulder Tap” operation, 20 people were approached by minors and asked if they would purchase alcohol for them.

The undercover alcohol program resulted in the arrest of four individuals and warnings to 20 business for minor violations. The Orange County decoy program was conducted pursuant to an ABC grant issued to the Costa Mesa Police Department.

Minors in possession of alcohol can have serious legal consequences especially if that minor decides to drink and drive. Aside from any DUI issues, at a minimum, a conviction for minor in possession of alcohol and/or drugs can result in the suspension of the minor’s driver’s license for one year.
