Federal Prosecutors Want 9 1/2 Year Sentence for America’s Sheriff Mike Corona!

by Gabriel Dorman on April 10, 2009

The Los Angeles Times reports that federal prosecutors are seeking a 9 1/2 year prison sentence and a $125,000 fine for former Orange County Sheriff Mike Corona, the man once dubbed by Larry King as “America’s Sheriff.”

Corona was acquitted in January on five felony counts that he misused the powers of his office to accept cash and gifts, however, he was convicted on one count of witness tampering for attempting to have one of his assistant sheriffs, Don Haidl, lie to a grand jury.

In a sentencing memorandum filed with the court on Friday, prosecutors argue that witness tampering is a serious crime especially for a sitting sheriff. They further argue that Corona has yet to accept any responsibility for his crime and/or shown any remorse for his actions. Instead, Corona has called the acquittals “absolute miracles” and believes he has been vindicated.

Probation has recommended a 6 1/2 year prison sentence for Corona.

Corona’s criminal defense attorneys filed their own sentencing memorandum on Friday in which they object to the probation department’s recommendation on the grounds that it innapropriately takes into consideration the allegations for which Corona was acquitted. The defense futher argues that Corona should receive probation or, at the very least, no more than 21 months in prison under the federal sentencing guidelines.
