The Orange County Register reports that DUI arrests linked to the downtown area of Fullerton have increased 270 percent this year according to Fullerton Police Department Captain Greg Mayes.
Comparing data from the first four months of 2008 and 2009, Capt. Mayes reported to the City Council that DUI arrests in the downtown area of Fullerton increased from 24 in 2008 for this period to 65 in 2009 as part of the Police Department’s efforts to stem disturbances in a downtown plagued by complaints by residents and business owners fed up with revelers. Downtown is defined as between Pomona and Malden avenues, and between Chapman and Santa Fe avenues.
Capt. Mayes attributes the 270 percent increase to stepped up patrols and business owners policing their own clientele. Police are also keeping tabs on where people are doing there drinking. “We also ask drivers who are pulled over in different parts of the city where they had their last drink,” Mayes said. “We are keeping track of those associated with downtown businesses.” Mayes further stated that “DUI citywide enforcement has become a priority.”
The police report also reflects a decrease in other areas of crime: assaults, 29 percent; fight calls, 32 percent; disturbance calls, 59 percent; public drunkenness, 50 percent; and possession of alcohol violations, 44 percent.
