Beer Pong Banned in Huntington Beach Bars

The Huntington Beach City Council has voted to ban beer pong in downtown Huntington Beach bars. The Huntington Beach beer pong ban will be imposed on new businesses and businesses renewing their entertainment licenses in an effort to reduce the number of alcohol-related incidents, such as DUIs, in Huntington Beach.

The Huntington Beach beer pong ban is just the latest attempt to clean up downtown Huntington Beach which has earned a reputation as a rowdy party town.

Beer pong is a drinking game offered by a number of downtown Huntington Beach establishments as entertainment to their patrons. Beer pong is played by setting up partially filled cups of beer in a triangle on two sides of a table. The players then try to toss a ping pong ball into a cup on the other side of the table, forcing the opposing player to chug all the beer in that cup. The team that loses is the one that finishes all the beer in their cups first.

Beer pong is an excessive drinking game. Excessive drinking leads to poor judgment which, in turn, can lead to all sorts of unsavory behavior such as DUI, drunk in public and other alcohol-related crimes. The problem comes when bars insert themselves into this equation by offering an excessive drinking game as a form of entertainment to their patrons.

In reference to the Huntington Beach beer pong ban, Huntington Beach Police Capt. Chuck Thomas says “We did not believe that type of game was in the best interest of the community.”

While the Huntington Beach beer pong ban will only apply to new businesses or those attempting to renew their entertainment license, all downtown businesses are being encouraged to voluntarily stop offering beer pong and other alcohol games to their patrons. If they don’t, Huntington Beach Police Chief Kenneth Small says businesses run the risk of not getting their licenses renewed.
