The Orange County Register reports that authorities from the Laguna Beach Police Department have seized more than 285 pot plants from a home in Laguna Beach.
Armed with a search warrant, investigators found just under 28 pounds of marijuana in a house on Baja Street revealing what they believe is an extensive cultivation operation. Michael Eric Newman, 46, was arrested and charged with cultivation of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sales and conspiracy to commit a crime.
Sgt. Kravetz said that Newman made a statement that he was growing the marijuana for medical patients, however, Newman never notified the state or city of his intent to do so. The city of Laguna Beach recently passed a moratorium on such facilities in order to draft local ordinances governing their operation.
Newman is currently being held in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail.
