Drug Smuggling Checkpoint Nets 18 Pounds of Cocaine

by Gabriel Dorman on February 15, 2010

Drug sniffing dogs found 18 pounds of cocaine at a drug smuggling checkpoint in San Clemente over the weekend. The 18 pounds of cocaine  were found in a Dodge truck after its two occupants gave differing accounts as to where they were heading.

The San Clemente drug smuggling checkpoint was set up near the San Clemente border patrol inspection station along the 5 Freeway. About 11 a.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies spotted two men driving a newer model Dodge truck. When the deputies questioned the men, they gave different responses as to where they were going.

The two men were pulled from the vehicle while drug sniffing dogs  searched the car. The dogs alerted deputies as to the presence of drugs hidden in the truck. After a thorough search of the truck, the Sheriff’s deputies located 18 pounds of cocaine.

The two men were arrested on drug-related charges. The identities of the two men have not been disclosed.

The San Clemente drug smuggling checkpoint was conducted pursuant to Operation Stonegarden which targets drug smugglers along the freeway. The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
