Huntington Beach Police Officer Arrested for Domestic Violence

by Gabriel Dorman on September 3, 2009

The Orange County Register reports that a Huntington Beach Police Officer was arrested and charged in a number of domestic violence related assaults on his wife and girlfriend. The Huntington Beach police officer is further charged with attempting to dissuade his wife from reporting the domestic violence abuse in an effort to keep his job.

Huntington Beach police officer James Roberts III, 33 is charged with 17 felony counts of false imprisonment, threats, domestic battery, aggravated assault, dissuading a witness by force or threat and vandalism.

The Huntington Beach police officer married his wife in 2003 and, after having a son, started relationship with another woman in 2007.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office allege that between June of 2007 and May of 2008, Roberts would restrain his wife against her will, push her to the ground and further threaten to kill her if she reported  the domestic abuse as it would cause him to lose his job. It is further alleged that the Huntington Beach police officer would forcibly restrain his wife while she was holding the couple’s young son.

As for the girlfriend, the Huntington Beach police officer would engage in similar conduct, often restraining her against her will much in the same manner he did with his wife. After the girlfriend broke off the relationship in early 2008, Officer Roberts invited her to his apartment to talk and forcible restrained and pushed her when she tried to leave.

The Huntington Beach police officer even confronted a male friend of his wife’s threatening him by telling the friend to stay away from his wife and insinuated that he knew where the friend lives and likes to hang out.

Roberts is currently being held in Orange County Jail on $250,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned on the domestic violence related charges in Orange County Superior Court in Santa Ana on Friday.
