The Los Angeles Times reports Phil Spector, the music pioneer and legend, has been sentenced to serve in prison for his second degree murder conviction for the 2003 shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson.
Spector was convicted by a jury on April 13 after his re-trial for murder stemming from the incident in which Clarkson was shot and killed while sitting in a chair in the foyer of his Alhambra mansion. During the second trial, the prosecution argued that Spector was a was a gun-toting, woman hater who shot Clarkson while the defense argued that the evidence supported their theory that Clarkson committed suicide over being distressed about her career.
At the sentencing, Clarkson’s mother, Donna Clarkson, told the court that she was heartbroken over the death of her daughter. She said “[a]ll our plans together are destroyed. Now I can only visit her in the cemetery.”
Spector’s criminal defense attorney, Doron Weinberg, maintained his client’s innocence telling the judge that “[t]he evidence did not establish Mr. Spector’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.” The defense vows to appeal the conviction.
